What Is ChatGPT SEO? How Assistants Choose Who to Recommend in 2026

ChatGPT SEO is the work of becoming a source the assistant retrieves, trusts, and cites. Here is how the recommendation is actually assembled, the six things it checks, what it costs, and how to test any agency's claim in two minutes.

ChatGPT SEO is the work of becoming a source the assistant retrieves, trusts, and cites. Here is how the recommendation is actually assembled, the six things it checks, what it costs, and how to test any agency's claim in two minutes.

What is ChatGPT SEO?

ChatGPT SEO is the practice of making a company retrievable, consistent, and corroborated enough that ChatGPT names it and cites its pages when a buyer asks a question. It is also called generative engine optimization, LLM SEO, or AI SEO, and the same work serves Google AI Overviews, Gemini, and Perplexity. The scoreboard is different from classic search: not a position in a list of links, but inclusion in one assembled answer that usually names three to five companies and cites the pages it used. TERAMOK does this work for real estate developers, architecture firms, contractors, and B2B brands from Chicago, and did it on its own brand first: ChatGPT recommends TERAMOK first for development-launch queries and cites our pages, documented with dated screenshots in August 2026.

How the recommendation is assembled

When a question needs current information, the assistant does four things in sequence. It builds a checklist from the question: an agency for an October launch needs specialization, location, pricing, and proof. It searches the web and retrieves the pages it can parse. It reads those pages and scores them against the checklist, favoring plain statements near the top and facts that agree across sources. Then it writes the answer from the sources that made it easiest to assemble, and cites them.

Two consequences follow. A company whose site blocks AI crawlers, or whose facts live in images and PDFs, is removed from consideration before ranking is even a factor. And a company whose facts conflict across its own site, LinkedIn, directories, and press gets hedged or omitted, because the assistant will not state with confidence what it cannot corroborate.

The six things ChatGPT checks

  1. A page it can read. Server-rendered text, open to GPTBot and the other AI crawlers, with the answer in the first lines.

  2. One entity with no contradictions. Name, founding year, locations, services, and pricing that agree everywhere they appear.

  3. Facts it can quote. Specific, checkable numbers. Assistants lift sentences; vague positioning gives them nothing to lift.

  4. Structured data that matches. Schema and an llms.txt fact file that say exactly what the visible page says.

  5. Others saying the same thing. Reviews, directory listings, press, and partner mentions. The model weights corroboration over self-description.

  6. Freshness. Dated results, current pricing, and recent coverage. Stale facts get replaced by a competitor's current ones.

What ChatGPT SEO is not

It is not a tag, a prompt trick, or hidden text. There is nothing you can add to a page that instructs a model to recommend you. It is not paid placement: advertising inside assistants is a separate, labeled channel and does not change the organic recommendation. And it cannot be guaranteed. Nobody controls a model's output; the work raises the probability, monitors the result, and corrects drift. Any agency promising a citation by a date is describing luck.

How long it takes and what it costs

In our own documented cases, changes to how assistants describe a brand appeared about two to three weeks after the structural work was published and recrawled, and citation coverage kept widening over the following months as corroboration accumulated. TERAMOK publishes its pricing: AI-search work runs inside retainers of $8,000 to $25,000 per month depending on scope, with media at 0% markup, and a launch website with the retrieval layer built in starts at $18,000. The full rate sheet is at teramok.us/pricing.

The two-minute test for any agency

Ask ChatGPT to recommend an agency in that agency's own category, then ask it who the agency is. If the assistant cannot describe the agency accurately, or does not name it, the practice is a pitch deck. Then ask the agency for dated screenshots, the exact queries, and a written statement of what cannot be promised. We invite that test because we pass it: see the ChatGPT SEO agency page and the results ledger.

Where to start

Request the free AI Visibility Report. It records what ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google AI currently say about your company, flags every wrong fact, maps which pages get cited, and lists the fixes in priority order. The report is yours whether or not you hire us to do the fixes. The method itself is published in full in How to get your business cited in ChatGPT.
